Energy Minister Orders Installations Audit After Akosombo Fire

Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has ordered a nationwide audit of energy infrastructure following the recent explosion and fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) substation in Akosombo.

The directive, which takes effect immediately, seeks to assess the operational readiness and safety of critical installations across the country, amid concerns over system vulnerabilities.

Speaking after inspecting the affected facility, Mr Jinapor said the audit was necessary to prevent future incidents and reinforce the resilience of Ghana’s power system.

“This situation calls for immediate action. We must take a second look at all our energy installations to ensure that they are fit for purpose and able to withstand operational risks.” - Minister for Energy

He noted that while periodic checks are conducted, the Akosombo incident has exposed the need for a more comprehensive and urgent review.

The Minister assured the public that the government remains committed to safeguarding national energy infrastructure and restoring stability to power supply.

He emphasized that the audit would help identify potential risks, improve maintenance systems, and strengthen safety protocols across the sector.

The move is expected to enhance confidence in Ghana’s energy system while ensuring that critical infrastructure can withstand operational pressures and unforeseen emergencies.
