Trading activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) surged to GH¢121.57 million on Wednesday, driven overwhelmingly by a massive block trade in MTN Ghana shares that overshadowed activity across the rest of the market.
By the close of the July 29 session, investors had traded 18.39 million shares. MTN Ghana alone accounted for 16.77 million of those shares, valued at GH¢118.43 million.
That translated into 91.21 percent of total market volume and an even more striking 97.42 percent of the value traded.
It was a busy day on paper. Beneath the headline figures, however, the market looked far quieter.
MTN trade drives market liquidity
MTN Ghana ended the session unchanged at GH¢7.06, the same price at which it opened and traded throughout the day. The stock finished with a closing offer of GH¢7.10 against a bid of GH¢7.06.
The sheer size of the MTN transaction once again highlighted the telecom giant's role as the exchange's primary source of liquidity.
Excluding MTN, trading across all other listed equities, exchange traded funds and Ghana Alternative Market securities totalled less than GH¢3.14 million.
Clydestone reaches yearly high
Clydestone Ghana emerged among the session's strongest gainers, climbing GH¢0.16, or 3.56 percent, to close at GH¢4.66, matching its highest price of the year.
The gain came shortly after the technology company announced it had initiated High Court proceedings against MTN Ghana, MTN Group Limited and MobileMoney Fintech Limited over the alleged unauthorised use of proprietary intellectual property related to mobile money.
Only 7,024 shares changed hands, worth GH¢33,154.60, suggesting the price increase occurred in relatively thin trading.
Intravenous Infusions posted one of the day's biggest advances, rising 8.86 percent to GH¢0.86 after 631,160 shares valued at GH¢542,797.60 were traded. Hords also impressed, adding 10 percent to close at GH¢0.33, though trading volume remained modest.
Mixed performance across listed stocks
CalBank gained 2.56 percent to end at GH¢0.80, while Republic Bank Ghana and Enterprise Group also closed higher.
On the losing side, Kasapreko slipped to GH¢2.00 despite recording the second-highest value traded after MTN, with transactions worth GH¢1.40 million. Ecobank Transnational Incorporated also edged lower, closing at GH¢1.95.
GCB Bank remained unchanged at GH¢43.20 with trades worth GH¢440,640, while Ecobank Ghana closed flat at GH¢39.00. GOIL also held steady at GH¢7.96.
The session produced several notable price gains, but market participation remained heavily concentrated in one stock.
While Clydestone attracted fresh investor attention and Intravenous Infusions extended its rally, MTN Ghana once again carried the weight of trading on the exchange, underscoring its continued dominance in market liquidity.
