About 15,000 aspirants are seeking executive positions in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the party holds constituency elections this weekend to renew its grassroots leadership ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The exercise, scheduled mainly for Saturday, October 24, and Sunday, October 25, covers the party’s structures across 276 constituencies. Successful candidates will take responsibility for organising local activities, mobilising members and coordinating constituency affairs.
The party’s elections official, Mahdi Jibrill, noted that the exercise forms part of a broader programme to elect leaders from constituency to national level.
Contest for grassroots leadership
Aspirants are competing for positions including constituency chairman, vice-chairman, secretary, treasurer, organiser, deputy organiser, communications officer, women’s organiser and youth organiser.
According to Jibrill, the Electoral Commission will conduct the elections in collaboration with constituency election committees, while the Ghana Police Service will provide security.
He said executives in Juabeso and Banda were going unopposed. Ketu South was given approval to hold its exercise on Friday, October 23, because other activities would clash with the weekend schedule.
The new executives will form the constituency leadership through which the party manages its local organisation and prepares for the next general election.
Nkwanta North faces court dispute
The nationwide exercise comes amid a dispute in Nkwanta North, where the High Court in Dambai reportedly granted an interlocutory injunction restraining the constituency elections following concerns about the legitimacy of some branch executives.
Speaking in an interview on October 22, Jibrill maintained that the party had not been formally served and was continuing preparations. “The Nkwanta North election will come on this weekend,” he said.
Aggrieved members subsequently claimed relevant authorities had been served, while constituency chairman Isaiah Dordoe denied receiving the order.
Under the NDC’s published timetable, regional executive elections are scheduled for November 14 and 15, preceded by regional youth and women’s conferences on November 13.
The reorganisation will culminate in a national congress on December 19, when delegates are expected to elect the party’s national executive officers.
