The National Democratic Congress has suspended Daniel Nortey from all media appearances and public engagements on behalf of the party until further notice, following remarks he made during a television discussion on the sexual abuse allegations at Obuasi Senior High Technical School.
The NDC National Communication Bureau announced the decision in a statement dated Thursday, October 22, saying it viewed the comments with “serious concern and distaste.”
Mr Nortey, the party’s Amasaman Constituency Communications Officer, had attracted criticism over comments made while discussing allegations involving the interdicted headmaster of Obuasi SHTS, Zakaria Abdulai.
Party Says Abuse Claims Must Not Be Trivialised
The NDC said it maintained a zero tolerance position on sexual abuse and exploitation, particularly where children are involved.
“We condemn remarks that trivialise such allegations or undermine the seriousness with which they must be treated,” the party said.
The Communication Directorate said discussions about alleged sexual abuse should be handled with sensitivity, responsibility and respect for due process rather than reduced to partisan political exchanges.
Mr Nortey had already issued an unreserved apology for his remarks, describing his comments as inappropriate and asking Ghanaians, particularly women, for forgiveness.
The NDC acknowledged the apology but said disciplinary action was still necessary.
Suspension Takes Immediate Effect
“Consequently, the Communication Directorate has suspended Mr. Daniel Nortey from all media appearances and public engagements in the name of the Party, with immediate effect and until further notice,” the statement said.
The decision follows public criticism of Mr Nortey’s comments, including calls from the NPP’s Amasaman Constituency Communications Directorate for disciplinary action.
The NDC said allegations of sexual abuse must be treated seriously and handled according to law, while maintaining its commitment to the protection of women and children and accountability within the party.
