The National Democratic Congress has directed Zakaria Abdulai to step aside as its parliamentary candidate for Juaben Constituency, clearing the way for police investigators to probe allegations against him without interference.
The party's Functional Executive Committee announced the decision Tuesday, updating an earlier press release issued October 19.
According to the statement, FEC wants the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service to conduct its work "unhindered," a word the party used deliberately to signal it is not shielding Abdulai from scrutiny.
Not a Verdict, the Party Insists
NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey was careful to frame the move as procedural rather than punitive.
"This position is taken in good faith and is in no way a determination of the merits of the allegations against Mr Abdulai, who remains entitled to the presumption of innocence," the statement read.
The party said it expects CID to deliver a "thorough, fair and expeditious" investigation and has committed to being guided by whatever the findings turn out to be.
Copies of the release were sent to the Ashanti Regional Election Committee and the Juaben Constituency Election Committee, both directed to take note and act accordingly, likely signaling how the constituency's candidacy process will be handled while investigations continue.
