Petroleum trade through Ghana to Burkina Faso has climbed to 40 percent of that country's national consumption, up from just 15 percent since President John Dramani Mahama returned to office in 2024, as Tema Oil Refinery and Sonabhy deepen their institutional partnership.
The figures emerged during a management visit by a Sonabhy delegation to TOR's Managing Director, Edmond Kombat, as both companies explored ways to expand cooperation within the petroleum sector.
The delegation also paid a courtesy call on Energy and Green Transition Minister Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, thanking him, President Mahama and the Ghanaian government for backing petroleum movement, trading and supply arrangements for Burkina Faso.
Kombat used the meeting to underscore just how much the long-standing relationship between the two companies has shaped regional petroleum trade.
He pointed to the jump in Sonabhy's supply through Ghana as proof that sustained institutional ties can genuinely move the needle on regional trade volumes, describing it as evidence of Ghana's growing weight as a strategic petroleum hub in West Africa.
For TOR, he said, the engagement offers a chance to explore how stronger regional relationships can support its own business goals while reinforcing Ghana's position within the broader West African petroleum value chain.
Sonabhy Eyes Further Collaboration
Sonabhy's Managing Director, Dr Patrice Forogo, expressed appreciation for the growing collaboration and said he remains committed to strengthening petroleum trade through Ghana going forward.
He voiced optimism about future cooperation generating additional revenue through mutually agreed transactions and services between the two institutions, and took a moment to congratulate Kombat on his appointment, wishing him well in delivering on the mandate given to him by the President.
The discussions reflected a broader push within the region's petroleum industry toward tighter collaboration on supply arrangements, commercial relationships and energy security.
With demand for reliable petroleum supplies only growing across West Africa, closer ties between TOR and Sonabhy could open doors for further trade and knowledge-sharing.
The visit wrapped up with a tour of key refinery areas, including the utilities, Tank Farm, New Safety Block, Quality Control section and the F-61 Furnace at the Crude Distillation Unit, giving the delegation a firsthand look at TOR's operations and ongoing development work.
