Ghana Stock Exchange Turnover Jumps 300% as MTN Ghana Dominates Trading

Trading activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange picked up sharply on Monday, October 5, with Ghana Stock Exchange turnover rising to GH¢17.65 million as heavy activity in MTN Ghana lifted both market volume and value.

A total of 3.45 million shares changed hands during the session, up from 1.03 million shares worth GH¢4.40 million on October 2.

That represented a 233.6% increase in trading volume and a 300.6% jump in value.

Market breadth also improved. Seven equities gained while two declined, although most listed stocks finished unchanged. The stronger headline numbers, however, were driven largely by one counter.

MTN Ghana recorded 2.38 million shares traded at a value of GH¢15.49 million and closed unchanged at GH¢6.50.

The telecommunications company accounted for 69.1% of total market volume and approximately 87.8% of traded value.

Without MTN Ghana, total market turnover would have been only about GH¢2.15 million.

That concentration continues to highlight a familiar weakness in market liquidity. A substantial movement in one heavily traded stock can dramatically change overall turnover even when activity across most of the exchange remains thin.

Banking Stocks Provide Support

GCB Bank gained GH¢0.60 to close at GH¢40.60, while Ecobank Transnational Incorporated advanced 3.75% to GH¢1.66.

CalBank added one pesewa to finish at GH¢0.73 after 240,838 shares changed hands. Other major banking stocks remained flat.

Ecobank Ghana closed at GH¢39, Société Générale Ghana ended at GH¢5.10, Access Bank Ghana held at GH¢20.67 and Republic Bank Ghana remained at GH¢4.00.

The mixed performance suggests investors were selecting individual banking counters rather than making a broad sector-wide move.

Ghana Oil Company gained GH¢0.22, or 3.89%, to close at GH¢5.88 after 18,260 shares traded.

Kasapreko fell three pesewas to GH¢1.81, while Dannex Ayrton Starwin Pharma recorded the steepest decline of the day, dropping 8.93% from GH¢1.12 to GH¢1.02.

Despite the fall, Dannex remains well above its 2026 low of GH¢0.38.

GAX Stocks Lift Market Breadth

Activity on the Ghana Alternative Market was largely positive. Hords gained 8.33% to GH¢0.78, making it the biggest percentage gainer of the session.

Intravenous Infusions rose 8.16% to GH¢0.53 after 178,043 shares traded, while Digicut Production and Advertising climbed 5.88% to GH¢0.54, a new year high.

Those gains helped improve overall market breadth, but their contribution to market value remained small compared with MTN Ghana.

Several listed companies recorded no transactions at all, while NewGold saw only eight units traded.

Monday’s session therefore produced a stronger market on paper, with better breadth and much higher turnover. But the underlying liquidity picture remains uneven.

For the improvement to become more convincing, trading will need to broaden beyond MTN Ghana into banks, consumer stocks, industrial companies and other listed counters.
