The push to transform the capital into West Africa’s undisputed aviation hub has officially taken a major leap forward. President John Dramani Mahama has broken ground for the construction of a sprawling seven-storey multi-purpose car park and commercial complex right at Terminal 3 of the Accra International Airport.
This massive infrastructure drive is a direct response to a rapidly swelling aviation sector. Passenger traffic at the facility ballooned from 1.8 million in 2022 to a staggering 2.5 million in 2025. That sharp spike in human traffic made expanding the existing footprint an absolute necessity.
The new facility will deliver roughly 2,030 covered parking bays. The architectural blueprint goes way beyond vehicle storage by integrating high-end commercial areas, entertainment hubs and hospitality spaces to completely overhaul the traveler experience before passengers even reach the boarding gates.
Driving the Hub Strategy
Addressing the gathering at the sod cutting ceremony, the President made it clear that simply tallying the number of travelers walking through the arrival halls is no longer the ultimate goal. The broader state strategy revolves around securing serious regional dominance.

He challenged industry staff to match the new concrete structures with elevated service standards, demanding absolute professionalism, discipline and courtesy across the entire sector.
Self Financing the Infrastructure Boom
What makes this massive infrastructure push unique is the financing model behind it. The state is not dipping into the consolidated fund to pay for the heavy machinery.
According to the President, the brand new parking and commercial development is entirely self financed.
Funding is being pulled directly from the corporate balance sheets of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority and the Ghana Airports Company Limited without a single cedi of direct government funding.
This same independent funding model is currently paying for a new aviation control tower, the heavy refurbishment of Terminal 2 and a fresh transfer concourse linking the two main terminals.
