Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah Arrested After Voluntarily Reporting to EOCO

Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has been arrested by EOCO after voluntarily reporting to the anti-graft agency on Thursday, October 1, to assist with an ongoing investigation.

The Economic and Organised Crime Office said Mr Baffour Awuah, a Senior Partner of Sarkodie, Baffour Awuah and Partners, arrived at its premises at about 10 a.m. before being placed under arrest as investigators commenced the required procedures.

His appearance came a day after the Accra High Court issued a warrant authorising his arrest and the search and seizure of documents considered relevant to the investigation.

EOCO Investigates Financial Offence Allegations

According to EOCO, the investigation concerns allegations of criminal conspiracy, financial loss involving SIC Life Savings and Loans, money laundering, tax related offences and other matters.

The allegations remain under investigation and no finding of criminal liability has been made against the MP.

EOCO said it had spent several months seeking Mr Baffour Awuah’s attendance before investigators.

Mr Baffour Awuah has previously disputed aspects of EOCO’s account of those efforts, maintaining that representatives of his former law firm had appeared before the agency and supplied information requested by investigators.

EOCO Urges Public Against Premature Conclusions

The Office said Mr Baffour Awuah was cooperating with investigators and assured the public that the process would be conducted independently and in accordance with due process.

“The public is therefore urged to allow the investigative and judicial processes to proceed without speculation or premature conclusions regarding the culpability of any individual,” EOCO said.

Investigators later accompanied the MP to his former law firm and residence as part of evidence gathering authorised by the court.

EOCO said further information would be released when legally appropriate.
