Ghana’s energy sector has been thrown into disruption following the complete shutdown of the Akosombo Dam after a major fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) substation in Akosombo.
The Ministry of Energy confirmed that the incident caused extensive damage to critical infrastructure, forcing authorities to halt operations at one of the country’s most important power generation sources.
Speaking on Monday, April 27, the Ministry’s spokesperson, Richmond Rockson, described the destruction as severe, particularly within the dam’s switchyard system.
“The switch yard, which is at the Akosombo Substation, is completely burnt down and it is not salvageable. The primary control room for the switch yard is completely gone.” - Richmond Rockson
He added that the level of destruction made it difficult for officials to even access parts of the facility during initial assessments.
Impact on Power Supply
Authorities say the shutdown was unavoidable, given the central role the Akosombo Dam plays in Ghana’s electricity generation mix.
“When that happened, we had to shut the Akosombo Dam completely and so that is what caused the outages in many parts of the country,” Mr Rockson explained, noting that the dam remains a “major component” of national power supply.
The fire reportedly broke out around 2:01 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, rapidly engulfing the substation, which is a key node in Ghana’s electricity transmission network.
The incident has heightened concerns about infrastructure resilience, even as engineers work to assess damage and restore operations.
Government officials say efforts are underway to stabilize power supply while long-term recovery plans for the damaged facility are being developed.
