Mahama Explores Belarus Agro-Processing Model to Boost Ghana’s Agricultural Transformation

President John Dramani Mahama has intensified efforts to advance Ghana Agricultural Transformation by exploring modern agro-processing technologies during a visit to the Belarusian city of Brest as part of his ongoing state visit to Belarus.

The visit formed a key component of broader discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and identifying practical solutions to improve agricultural productivity, food security and value addition in Ghana.

President Mahama was welcomed by the Governor of Brest, Piotr Alexsandrovich Parkhomchik, alongside senior officials from Belarus’ Foreign Ministry before touring one of the country’s largest agro-processing facilities.

Learning from Belarus’ Agro-Processing Success

During the tour, the President was introduced to the facility’s advanced dairy processing systems, which produce a wide range of products including milk, cheese, baby food and milk powder for domestic consumption and export markets.

Accompanied by Presidential Adviser and Special Aide Joyce Bawah Mogtari and Ghana’s Ambassador to Moscow, Dr. Jehu-Appiah, President Mahama observed the plant’s technology-driven production chain and engaged company officials on operational efficiencies that have made Belarus a global leader in dairy exports.

The visit provided an opportunity for Ghana’s delegation to study industrial-scale agricultural processing methods that could be adapted to support Ghana’s growing agribusiness sector.

Speaking after the tour, President Mahama underscored the importance of adopting modern agricultural technologies to accelerate Ghana’s transition from smallholder farming to commercial-scale production.

“We are here to tap into Belarus’ vast experience as we work to make Ghana self-dependent in food production,” the President stated.

He noted that reducing post-harvest losses remains one of the major priorities of his administration, adding that improved processing, storage and value-addition technologies could significantly improve incomes for farmers while strengthening national food security.

According to him, lessons from Belarus could help Ghana build a more resilient and competitive agricultural sector capable of meeting domestic demand and expanding exports.

Expanding Trade and Investment Ties

Managing Director of the agro-processing company, Aleksandr Savchits, disclosed that the company generated more than US$1.4 billion in profit last year and has recently begun exporting dairy products to Ghana.

He expressed optimism about expanding exports to the Ghanaian market as trade relations between the two countries deepen.

President Mahama also encouraged Belarusian investors to explore partnerships with Ghanaian businesses, describing such collaborations as mutually beneficial opportunities for economic growth and industrial development.

The visit is expected to contribute to ongoing efforts to strengthen Ghana-Belarus cooperation in agriculture, technology transfer and agro-industrial development, as Ghana seeks to modernise its food production systems and increase value addition across the agricultural value chain.
