New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called for a united national approach to addressing Accra flooding, describing the recurring disaster as a challenge that requires expertise and cooperation beyond political differences.

Speaking on Tuesday, June 30, during a tour of flood-affected communities following Monday's torrential rains, Dr. Bawumia urged engineers, hydrologists and other experts to work together to develop lasting solutions to the capital's persistent flooding problem.

Call for national collaboration

According to the former Vice President, the annual flooding has become a national concern that should be addressed through collective action rather than partisan politics.

"All our energies, all our talents, all the engineers, all the hydrologists, we have to bring everybody together, regardless of party, because this is for Ghana.

"And let us do it for Ghana. Let us come together for Ghana and solve this problem for our country." - Dr. Bawumia

Dr. Bawumia stressed that bringing together professionals from diverse fields would help develop sustainable interventions capable of reducing the impact of heavy rains on vulnerable communities.

Appeal for relief support

Beyond long-term solutions, the NPP flagbearer appealed to Ghanaians to support families displaced by the floods, many of whom have lost homes, personal belongings and essential household items.

"I want to ask everybody, let's do this together, and let's provide immediate relief to the people who are affected.

"People need food, people don't have clothes, people don't have mattresses. Let us make sure that we come immediately to their aid." Dr. Bawumia

He also encouraged individuals, businesses, civil society organisations and community groups to contribute whatever assistance they could to help victims recover.

"Everybody should do something. Myself, I will try and help in the small way I can with some of these relief items.

"But I think that we are a country, our people, our communities are in need, and we should all chip in to come and help them." Dr. Bawumia

Monday's heavy rainfall triggered widespread flooding across the Greater Accra Region, claiming lives, displacing residents, damaging homes and businesses, and sparking a major fire outbreak in the Odawna area, prompting renewed calls for comprehensive flood mitigation measures.
