Ghana's Black Stars have secured qualification for the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 before kicking a ball in their final Group L match against Croatia, following results elsewhere that mathematically guaranteed their place in the knockout stage.
The Black Stars become one of the first five nations to book an early place in the next round, joining Egypt, England, Portugal and Paraguay under FIFA's expanded 48-team World Cup format.
Ghana's progression follows an impressive start to the tournament, with the team collecting four points from its opening two matches after edging Panama 1-0 before holding England to a spirited draw.
Results in Group H on Friday confirmed that four points would be enough to guarantee advancement, regardless of the outcome of Ghana's final group fixture.
Croatia Match Still Carries High Stakes
Although qualification has already been secured, Saturday's encounter against Croatia remains significant for Otto Addo's side.
The result will determine Ghana's final position in Group L and could influence the calibre of opponent the Black Stars face in the Round of 32.
A victory over the 2018 FIFA World Cup runners-up could see Ghana finish top of the group and potentially secure a more favourable knockout tie. A draw or defeat, however, could still be enough for the Black Stars to advance as group runners-up, depending on the final standings.
Under FIFA's new competition structure, the top two teams from each of the 12 groups qualify automatically for the knockout stage, alongside the eight best third-placed teams.
Confidence Grows After Strong Group Stage Campaign
Ghana's qualification represents a remarkable turnaround after the disappointment of failing to progress beyond the group stage at the previous World Cup.
The Black Stars have impressed with disciplined performances throughout the tournament, beginning with a dramatic stoppage-time victory over Panama before earning a hard-fought point against England.
The squad is also expected to receive a significant boost with the return of midfielder Thomas Partey, who missed the opening match because of travel documentation issues but is now available for selection against Croatia.
With their place in the knockout stage already assured, the Black Stars will now seek to preserve their unbeaten record, build further momentum and strengthen their credentials as contenders capable of making a deep run in the tournament.
The identity of Ghana's Round of 32 opponent will be confirmed after the conclusion of the final round of group-stage matches.
