A devastating China fireworks plant explosion has claimed at least 26 lives and left 61 others injured in central China, authorities confirmed on Tuesday, triggering a large-scale rescue and investigation operation.

The blast occurred on Monday afternoon at a fireworks manufacturing facility in Changsha, located within the county-level city of Liuyang in Hunan Province—a region renowned for its long-standing fireworks industry.

According to state media, nearly 500 rescuers were deployed to the scene as authorities rushed to contain the damage and assist victims.

Emergency teams evacuated nearby residents due to the risk posed by two black powder warehouses close to the blast site.

Changsha Mayor Chen Bozhang stated that search and rescue efforts have “largely been completed,” although officials are still verifying casualties and identifying victims.

Aerial footage showed plumes of smoke rising from the site, with several structures severely damaged or completely destroyed.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the explosion, with police detaining the individual in charge of the facility.

The plant was reportedly operated by Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Co., a company based in the Liuyang area.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for “all-out efforts” to locate any remaining missing persons and ensure proper treatment for the injured. He also urged a swift probe into the incident and demanded accountability where necessary.

Xi further directed authorities to strengthen safety oversight in high-risk industries and improve public safety management nationwide.

Rescue teams adopted specialised safety measures, including spraying and humidification techniques, to minimise further hazards.

Authorities also deployed robotic equipment to assist in search and recovery operations, reflecting growing reliance on technology in emergency response.

Historical Context and Safety Concerns

Liuyang, often described as a global centre for fireworks production, has deep historical roots in the industry. According to Guinness World Records, the earliest recorded firecracker invention is linked to a monk from the region during the Tang dynasty.

However, the latest tragedy underscores ongoing safety concerns. China has experienced multiple fireworks-related accidents in recent years, including two fatal explosions earlier this year during the Lunar New Year period.

The incident highlights the persistent risks associated with fireworks manufacturing and the urgent need for stricter safety enforcement across the sector.
