Ghana on Path to Debt Sustainability - Ato Forson

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson says Ghana is on track to debt sustainability and shifting focus from stabilisation to growth after talks with the World Bank.

Speaking after high-level discussions with Ousmane Diagana on the sidelines of the IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C., the Finance Minister said the country’s economic outlook is improving with renewed support from development partners.

“Ghana has stabilised its economy and is firmly on the path to debt sustainability. We are now shifting focus from stabilisation to growth.” - Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson

Dr. Forson explained that the government is now prioritising strategic investments aimed at boosting productivity and job creation.

Key sectors identified include commercial agriculture and agribusiness, energy development, education, and infrastructure.

He noted that particular attention will be given to gas-to-power and gas-to-fertiliser initiatives, which are expected to strengthen energy security and support industrial growth.

Commitment to Fiscal Discipline

Despite the pivot to growth, the Finance Minister stressed that fiscal discipline will remain a cornerstone of government policy.

“We remain committed to disciplined fiscal management while protecting vulnerable populations,” he said, underscoring the need to balance economic expansion with social protection.

Dr. Forson welcomed continued support from the World Bank, describing it as critical to sustaining Ghana’s recovery momentum.

He said the renewed engagement reflects growing confidence in Ghana’s economic direction and will play a key role in consolidating recent gains.

The government’s strategy, he added, is to build a more resilient and inclusive economy that can withstand future shocks while delivering long-term growth.
