Ghana is set to host a landmark Ghana reparatory justice conference in June, following what officials describe as a “historic” resolution by the United Nations recognising the transatlantic slave trade as a crime against humanity.

The three-day event, scheduled for June 17 to 19 in Accra, will be hosted by John Dramani Mahama, who also serves as the African Union champion for reparations.

The conference follows overwhelming global backing for the UN resolution, with 123 member states voting in favour and only three opposing. The outcome has been widely interpreted as a significant shift toward global recognition of historical injustices linked to slavery.

According to Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting will “chart the next phase of the global reparations agenda” and deepen international dialogue on justice for descendants of enslaved Africans.

High-Level Participation Expected

Organisers say the conference will convene heads of state, diplomats, scholars, activists and international organisations, reflecting its global significance.

“The conference will bring together heads of state, diplomats, scholars, activists and representatives of international organisations,” the statement noted, highlighting the breadth of engagement anticipated.

Discussions are expected to move beyond acknowledgment toward actionable frameworks, including economic, political and cultural forms of redress.

Ghana’s Growing Leadership Role

Ghana has increasingly positioned itself as a leading voice in the reparations movement, building on initiatives such as the “Year of Return” and “Beyond the Return” campaigns aimed at reconnecting the African diaspora with the continent.

With support from the African Union and growing international consensus, the Accra conference is expected to strengthen Africa’s collective position in global negotiations.

Analysts say the timing is critical as calls for reparatory justice gain momentum worldwide, driven by ongoing inequalities rooted in slavery and colonialism.

The conference is expected to conclude with a formal declaration outlining priorities and strategies for advancing reparatory justice, marking a significant step toward coordinated global action.
