The Ministry of Health Ghana has partnered with the World Bank Group to launch a Regional Health, Nutrition and Population Strategy aimed at strengthening healthcare systems across West and Central Africa.

Unveiled under the theme “Fit to Prosper,” the initiative focuses on tackling infectious diseases, malnutrition and the growing burden of non-communicable diseases, while positioning health as a driver of economic growth.

Speaking at the launch, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh stressed the need for urgent and collective action to address shared health challenges.

He noted that “health challenges are interconnected and demand collective solutions,” adding that no country can achieve sustainable development without a resilient healthcare system.

The Minister highlighted Ghana’s efforts to expand primary healthcare, reduce financial barriers and strengthen infrastructure, workforce capacity and disease prevention systems.

Health as a Pillar of Economic Growth

President John Dramani Mahama underscored the economic importance of healthcare, describing it as central to national transformation.

Representing the President, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah pointed to key reforms, including the Free Primary Health Care Initiative and improvements to the National Health Insurance Scheme, aimed at expanding access and ensuring sustainable financing.

He emphasised that these reforms are designed to improve quality care and long-term system resilience.

Robert R Taliercio praised Ghana’s progress, noting that its achievements in improving health outcomes reflect the impact of sustained investment and strong policy direction.

He reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to supporting regional efforts to strengthen healthcare systems and improve population wellbeing.

Broad Stakeholder Engagement

The one-day event brought together Ministers of Health from across the region, alongside development partners, health experts, academics and private sector stakeholders.

Discussions focused on building resilient health systems, enhancing regional cooperation and advancing policies that promote long-term wellbeing.

The Ghana health World Bank partnership is expected to play a key role in shaping a more coordinated and sustainable approach to healthcare delivery across West and Central Africa.
