President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned a new liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vessel in South Korea aimed at strengthening Ghana’s energy supply chain and improving the reliability of LPG distribution across the country.

The vessel, named MT Asharami Ghana LPG Carrier, was constructed for Sahara Energy Resources by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries at its shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea.

The commissioning ceremony formed part of President Mahama’s working visit to the Asian nation and underscored growing cooperation between Ghana and international energy partners.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President described the vessel as a key investment in the country’s energy infrastructure.

“Today we celebrate not only engineering excellence but also the power of partnership,” he said, noting that the project marks an important step toward ensuring stable energy supplies for Ghana and the wider West African region.

President Mahama explained that the new LPG carrier will play a crucial role in strengthening Ghana’s supply system as demand for cleaner cooking fuel continues to rise.

According to him, the vessel will operate under the Ghanaian flag and will be dedicated to transporting LPG specifically for the Ghanaian market, improving supply security and reducing logistical constraints in the delivery of the fuel.

He noted that the improved transportation capacity could also contribute to stabilising LPG prices by making the distribution process more efficient.

President Mahama commended the companies involved in the project, including Sahara Energy Group and West African Gas Limited, for their role in advancing Ghana’s energy infrastructure.

According to him, the project highlights the importance of partnerships between African energy companies and global industry leaders in addressing infrastructure gaps.

He emphasised that collaboration, innovation, and investment are essential to building resilient energy systems capable of supporting economic growth and expanding regional energy markets.

The President added that modern energy infrastructure will remain central to Africa’s long-term development and the continent’s transition toward more reliable and sustainable energy supply systems.
