The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) closed Friday's trading session on a stronger footing, with market turnover climbing sharply to GH¢15.57 million as investors remained heavily focused on MTN Ghana, even though the telecom giant slipped slightly at the close.
Trading data for July 17 showed that 2.78 million shares changed hands, representing a total market value of GH¢15.57 million.
Compared with the previous trading session, market volume expanded by 16.51 percent while the value of transactions surged by 57.37 percent, pointing to renewed investor activity after a quieter outing a day earlier.
The bulk of the action came from ordinary shares, which contributed more than 94 percent of total volume and 96 percent of the day's value, underscoring the continued dominance of the main equity market.
MTNGH Keeps Market Moving
MTN Ghana once again proved to be the exchange's liquidity anchor.
The telecom stock recorded 1.47 million shares worth GH¢9.64 million, accounting for more than half of all shares traded and nearly 62 percent of the total value exchanged during the session.
Yet the heavy activity did not translate into a price gain. MTNGH closed at GH¢6.57, down two pesewas from its previous volume-weighted average price of GH¢6.59, reflecting modest selling pressure despite sustained investor interest.
Kasapreko PLC followed as the second busiest counter. Investors traded 671,057 shares valued at GH¢1.34 million, with the stock ending the day unchanged at GH¢2.00.
GOIL also featured prominently, posting trades worth GH¢870,059, while GCB Bank added GH¢841,470 in turnover and edged slightly higher to GH¢42.78.
Mixed Performance Across Counters
The trading session produced a mixed picture on prices.
Clydestone emerged as the biggest gainer, rising 8.11 percent to GH¢4.00. Intravenous Infusions climbed 7.69 percent to GH¢0.42, while Hords advanced 5.88 percent to GH¢0.18. Ecobank Transnational Incorporated also recovered strongly, gaining 5.61 percent to close at GH¢2.07.
On the losing side, Guinness Ghana Breweries shed 0.25 percent to GH¢11.95. Standard Chartered Bank Ghana slipped marginally to GH¢70.02, while MTNGH's decline tempered what might otherwise have been a stronger market finish.
Meanwhile, NewGold exchanged 1,192 units valued at more than GH¢551,000, maintaining its previous closing price of GH¢462.39.
Liquidity Still Concentrated
The Ghana Alternative Market recorded modest activity, led almost entirely by Intravenous Infusions, while ZEN Petroleum Holdings traded 10,415 shares and closed unchanged at GH¢11.00.
A number of listed companies, including Access Bank Ghana, AngloGold Ashanti, Cocoa Processing Company, First Atlantic Bank and Trust Bank Gambia, recorded no trades during the session, highlighting the uneven distribution of market participation.
Friday's figures suggest investors remain selective. MTNGH and Kasapreko together accounted for more than three-quarters of total trading volume, reinforcing the concentration of liquidity in a handful of stocks.
Even so, the session offered an encouraging sign for the broader market. Trading activity picked up noticeably, gainers outnumbered decliners, and investors will now be watching whether momentum spreads beyond the exchange's dominant counters in the sessions ahead.
