Ghana Stock Exchange turnover reached GH¢10.38 million on Friday, August 21, 2026, but the headline figure told only part of the day's story.
More than four fifths of the value traded came from just three companies: GCB Bank, MTN Ghana and TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana.
The official market list for Trading Session 7280 showed investors exchanged 1,621,771 shares valued at GH¢10,378,057.62.
Ordinary shares contributed 1,191,861 shares worth GH¢10.08 million, while trading on the Ghana Alternative Market added to overall volumes.
GCB Takes 41% of Market Turnover
GCB Bank was comfortably the biggest contributor by value.
Investors traded 109,926 GCB shares worth GH¢4.29 million, giving the bank approximately 41.31% of the entire market turnover.
Its share price, however, slipped marginally. GCB closed at GH¢39.00 compared with GH¢39.04 in the previous session, a decline of roughly 0.10%.
MTN Ghana followed with 324,776 shares worth GH¢2.27 million. That represented about 21.90% of Friday's traded value.
The telecommunications stock managed a small gain, closing at GH¢7.00 from GH¢6.99.
TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana completed the trio that dominated the session. Its 43,939 shares generated GH¢1.85 million in turnover, accounting for about 17.78% of the market.
Unlike GCB and MTN, however, TotalEnergies recorded a sizeable price movement. The stock climbed 5.45% from GH¢39.83 to GH¢42.00.
Combined, the three counters generated approximately 81% of total market turnover.
Unilever Jumps 10%, Enterprise Slides
Some of the sharpest price movements came outside the day's biggest trades.
Unilever Ghana climbed 10% to GH¢35.20 from GH¢32.00. Yet only 1,028 shares changed hands, worth GH¢34,940.80. It was a strong percentage gain on relatively thin trading.
Dannex Ayrton Starwin also attracted attention, rising 9.48% from GH¢1.16 to GH¢1.27. A total of 201,500 shares were traded for GH¢255,905.
Ecobank Transnational Incorporated gained about 3.85% to GH¢1.89, while Societe Generale Ghana advanced 2.94% to GH¢5.60.
Enterprise Group went in the opposite direction.
The stock dropped 9.44% from GH¢8.16 to GH¢7.39 after 64,776 shares changed hands for GH¢481,976.72.
Benso Palm Plantation also declined 1.30% to GH¢76.00, while Kasapreko slipped about 1.01% to GH¢1.97.
GAX Adds Volume, Not Much Value
Activity on the Ghana Alternative Market was led by Intravenous Infusions, which traded 331,629 shares worth GH¢220,128.63. Its share price remained unchanged at GH¢0.65.
Hords was more active on the price front, gaining 9.33% from GH¢0.75 to GH¢0.82 on 93,857 shares valued at GH¢76,721.03.
Digicut Production & Advertising rose 5.88% to GH¢0.18, while Meridian Marshalls recorded only 102 shares.
Several established counters, including Ecobank Ghana, Access Bank Ghana, Standard Chartered Bank Ghana, Fan Milk, GOIL and ZEN Petroleum, closed unchanged.
Turnover Masks Narrow Market Activity
Friday's numbers leave the market with a mixed picture.
GH¢10.38 million in turnover represents meaningful trading activity, while the gains in TotalEnergies and Unilever offered some positive momentum. Enterprise Group's sharp decline provided a counterweight.
The bigger issue is concentration.
With GCB, MTN Ghana and TotalEnergies responsible for roughly 81% of the money traded, Friday's session again showed how quickly a few large transactions can shape the headline Ghana Stock Exchange turnover figure.
For investors watching market depth, the spread of activity across listed companies may therefore matter just as much as the day's total value.
