The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has expressed concern over the conviction and sentencing of journalist Larry Alans Dogbey, Managing Editor of The Herald newspaper and theheraldghana.com, pledging to closely monitor the case while seeking legal guidance on the appropriate course of action.
In a statement issued on Thursday, June 25, and signed by General Secretary Dominic Hlordzi, the Association described the development as unfortunate following Mr. Dogbey's seven-day prison sentence for contempt of court.
The sentence was handed down by an Accra High Court presided over by Justice Isaac Addo in connection with a publication relating to a legal dispute involving businessman Kevin Okyere and Petraco SA.
GJA Urges Calm and Due Process
The Association said it has referred the matter to its legal team as part of its mandate to protect press freedom and safeguard the rights and welfare of journalists.
“The Association considers this development unfortunate and is closely monitoring the issues arising from the case,” the statement said.
The GJA urged journalists and members of the public to remain calm and exercise restraint in discussing the matter while legal processes continue.
It also encouraged all stakeholders to be circumspect in their public commentary and allow due process to take its course.
The Association assured its members and the public that it would soon communicate its considered position and any actions that may follow.
In the meantime, the GJA reaffirmed its solidarity with Larry Dogbey, stressing that it remains committed to defending media freedom, promoting responsible journalism and protecting the rights of journalists in Ghana.
