The Ministry of the Interior has urged the public to exercise extreme caution following heavy rains and widespread flooding that affected several parts of Ghana on Monday morning.
In a public safety advisory issued on June 29, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak appealed to residents to remain in safe locations until weather conditions improve, warning that unnecessary movement could endanger lives.
“As a precautionary public safety measure, members of the public are advised to remain where they are until conditions improve,” the Ministry said.
It added that people who are safely at home should remain indoors, while those at their workplaces or other secure locations should stay there until it is safe to travel.
Public Warned Against Entering Floodwaters
The Ministry strongly cautioned motorists and pedestrians against attempting to drive or walk through flooded roads, bridges and waterways, stressing that rising floodwaters could pose a serious risk to life and property.
Residents living in flood-prone communities were also advised to relocate to higher ground where it is safe to do so and promptly report emergencies or persons in distress to the nearest security agency or emergency response service.
The Ministry urged the public to remain calm, cooperate with directives from emergency personnel and rely only on official sources for information and updates on the evolving situation.
Emergency Services Deployed
According to the statement, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Armed Forces and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), together with other emergency response agencies, have been deployed to monitor the flooding, manage traffic, conduct rescue operations and assist affected residents.
The Ministry encouraged members of the public requiring emergency assistance to contact the Ghana Police Service on 18555 or 112, the Ghana National Fire Service on 192, or NADMO through 112.
Reaffirming the government's commitment to protecting lives, the Ministry said the safety and wellbeing of the public remain its highest priority.
It also expressed sympathy to all those affected by the floods and assured citizens that authorities would continue to monitor the situation closely while providing the necessary support and further updates as conditions develop.
