Mahama Launches Green City Project to Deliver 1,067 Affordable Homes in Ashanti Region

President John Dramani Mahama has officially cut the sod for the construction of the Green City Project at Dedesua in the Ashanti Region, marking a major step in government’s efforts to address Ghana’s growing housing deficit.

The 200-acre development is expected to deliver 1,067 residential units aimed at improving access to affordable housing for Ghanaians as urbanisation pressures continue to rise across the country.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Mahama described the housing deficit, estimated at more than 1.5 million units, as one of Ghana’s most pressing development challenges. He attributed the situation to years of inadequate planning, rising land prices, increasing construction costs and limited access to long-term financing.

“A nation that is seeking development must house its people with dignity,” he stated, adding that government was committed to implementing “a comprehensive housing agenda that addresses supply, improves affordability, strengthens tenant protection, and reforms housing finance to reflect the reality of Ghanaian incomes.”

Concerns Over Rapid Urbanisation

The President also expressed concern over the rapid growth of slums and worsening housing conditions in many urban communities.

According to him, the country risks facing a deeper housing crisis if urgent interventions are not undertaken to expand access to decent accommodation.

He noted that poor housing conditions continue to affect public health, educational outcomes and productivity, while also contributing to social instability in some communities.

President Mahama said his administration views affordable housing as a critical component of national development and economic transformation.

Wider Housing Agenda Underway

Beyond the Green City Project, the President disclosed that government is prioritising the completion of the stalled Saglemi Housing Project while also rolling out additional social housing initiatives across various districts.

According to him, the broader strategy is intended to reduce barriers to home ownership and provide sustainable housing solutions for low and middle-income earners.

The Green City Project is expected to combine modern residential planning with infrastructure and community facilities designed to support long-term urban development in the Ashanti Region.
