Mahama Inspects New Transformers to Improve Power Supply

President John Dramani Mahama has inspected newly acquired transformers at the Northern Electricity Distribution Company yard in Tamale as part of his Resetting Ghana Tour, reaffirming government’s commitment to stabilising electricity supply nationwide.

During the visit, the President noted that many existing transformers have become overstretched due to rising demand, explaining that infrastructure installed decades ago is now serving significantly larger populations.

President Mahama expressed optimism about reforms in the energy sector, highlighting plans to localise transformer production to boost capacity and ensure long-term sustainability.

He also commended NEDCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana for ongoing efforts to improve distribution.

Government Deploys Additional Transformers

Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, revealed that government is currently deploying high-capacity transformers across the Northern operational area to reduce system overloads.

He noted that while about 400 transformers were initially requested, government has increased the number to 500 to significantly enhance reliability. He appealed to the public for patience as installations continue.

The intervention forms part of broader efforts under the Resetting Ghana agenda to modernise energy infrastructure and improve service delivery.

Authorities say the upgrades are expected to reduce outages and ensure a more stable and efficient power supply across the country.
