The Government has signalled strong support for MTN Ghana to play a central role in Ghana’s upcoming 5G rollout, with indications the telecom giant could secure spectrum allocation during the country’s next 5G auction.
Speaking at the launch of MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary celebrations in Accra, Samuel Nartey George said government is determined to accelerate nationwide next-generation connectivity as part of Ghana’s broader digital transformation agenda.
“We are committed to ensuring that MTN plays a critical role in the 5G landscape,” the Minister stated. According to him, Cabinet has already approved the removal of restrictions that previously prevented MTN from participating in the country’s emerging 5G market.
Government Pushes for Ghana-Wide 5G Expansion
Mr George disclosed that authorities are targeting widespread deployment of 5G services ahead of Ghana’s 70th independence anniversary celebrations, with ambitious nationwide coverage goals currently under consideration.
“I’m hoping that by Ghana at 70, we should be able to have rolled out 5G. Hopefully, MTN will get a block when we do the auction,” he said.
The Minister further revealed that government has granted additional spectrum allocation and technology neutrality measures to support MTN’s participation in the evolving telecommunications landscape.
The planned rollout forms part of wider efforts to improve digital connectivity, support innovation and expand access to advanced internet infrastructure across the country.
Telecom Investments Expected Beyond Urban Centres
Government also wants telecom operators to extend investments beyond commercially attractive urban markets to underserved and rural communities.
Mr George stressed that digital inclusion remains a key national priority, adding that the benefits of 5G technology must reach all parts of the country rather than remain concentrated in major cities.
MTN recently announced a $1.1 billion investment programme focused on network expansion, infrastructure upgrades and support for future technologies including artificial intelligence, cloud computing and Internet of Things applications.
Industry analysts say the expansion of 5G infrastructure could create new opportunities in sectors such as education, healthcare, fintech, manufacturing and digital commerce, while also strengthening Ghana’s competitiveness in the global digital economy.
The government’s latest remarks suggest preparations for Ghana’s 5G transition are entering a more advanced phase as policymakers seek to position the country among Africa’s leading digital economies.
