NAIMOS Arrests 49 Illegal Miners After Armed Ambush in Adiewoso

A special operations team from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat has survived an armed ambush by suspected illegal miners in Nzema East, triggering a major crackdown that has led to dozens of arrests and significant seizures.

The incident occurred on April 28, 2026, when members of the taskforce encountered an illegal mining group operating within the Ghana Rubber Estates Limited plantation. According to officials, the miners opened fire on a NAIMOS patrol vehicle using pump-action weapons.

“The assailants discharged multiple rounds… requiring prompt response by NAIMOS to deter future occurrence,” the statement said. Despite the attack, the team withdrew tactically without sustaining casualties.

Intelligence-Led Operation Leads to Arrests

Following the ambush, NAIMOS launched an intelligence-driven operation to identify those responsible. This culminated in a dawn raid at Adiewoso and nearby communities in the Ahanta West District.

The coordinated cordon-and-search exercise resulted in the arrest of 114 individuals, who were transported to the Adiewoso Community Centre for screening and interrogation.

After verification, 49 were identified as suspected illegal miners actively operating within the plantation.

Others detained included casual workers, students, and local residents, who were later released after being cleared of any wrongdoing. Authorities also confirmed that three of the suspects are foreign nationals from Niger and Burkina Faso.

Cash, Weapons and Suspected Gold Seized

The operation yielded substantial recoveries, including a pump-action firearm and large sums of cash believed to be proceeds from illegal mining activities.

Officers retrieved GH₵140,000 from a vehicle linked to one suspect and an additional GH₵86,710 alongside substances suspected to be gold.

Two vehicles, including a Toyota Hilux, were impounded, while quantities of suspected narcotics and cigarettes believed to be connected to the operations were also seized.

One suspect, identified as the owner of the Hilux, is currently assisting with ongoing investigations.

Collaboration with Security Agencies

The operation was supported by a joint team involving GREL management and the Ghana Police Service, particularly the Agona Ahanta Command. Their role included helping to distinguish legitimate plantation workers from illegal operators.

All verified GREL employees were released, while the 49 suspects have been handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.

NAIMOS says the operation underscores its determination to confront illegal mining, especially in areas where it threatens livelihoods and undermines lawful economic activities.

“The Secretariat assured the public that no measure of intimidation or armed resistance will deter its operatives from executing the national mandate,” the statement emphasised.

The latest crackdown highlights growing efforts by authorities to tackle galamsey, a persistent challenge that continues to impact Ghana’s environment, agriculture, and local economies.
