The Nigeria has stepped up plans for voluntary repatriation of its citizens from South Africa following rising tensions linked to anti-migrant protests and concerns over undocumented immigration.
Authorities say the safety of Nigerians remains the government’s top priority as demonstrations in major South African cities intensify fears among migrant communities.
In a statement, Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, confirmed that arrangements are ongoing to organise return flights.
“The president has reiterated that the priority at this time remains the safety of our citizens,” she said, adding that efforts are underway to compile a list of Nigerians willing to return home.
At least 130 individuals have already registered with Nigeria’s diplomatic mission, with officials expecting more to sign up as the situation evolves.
Migrants Shut Businesses Amid Hostility
The Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa indicated that preparations are in place for a repatriation flight, noting that many Nigerians have been forced to shut down their businesses due to increasing hostility.
Its president, Frank Onyekwelu, said the worsening environment has left many with little choice but to return home.
South Africa hosts one of the largest Nigerian diaspora populations, comprising both documented and undocumented migrants.
South Africa Responds to Protests
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa acknowledged the tensions, stating that his government is addressing illegal migration and labour concerns. He urged citizens to avoid violence and instead report grievances through legal channels.
Further protests are expected between May 4 and 8, raising concerns about potential escalation.
Meanwhile, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has directed close monitoring of the situation. Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also summoned South Africa’s High Commissioner as part of ongoing diplomatic engagement.
Officials say missions in South Africa continue to work with local authorities to ensure the safety and protection of Nigerian nationals as the situation unfolds.
