Haruna Mohammed Expresses Disappointment Over Kennedy Agyapong Remarks

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed disappointment over recent comments made by former Assin Central Member of Parliament and former presidential aspirant Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, describing his public criticism of the party as unfortunate and urging members to exercise caution in their public statements.

The party's reaction follows a television interview on Thursday, June 18, during which Mr. Agyapong criticised the NPP and warned that he could reveal sensitive information about the party if provoked.

His remarks came days after he publicly accused the NPP of failing to complete and operationalise the Afari Military Hospital despite spending eight years in government.

Party Leadership Calls for Restraint

Speaking in an interview, NPP Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed said party leaders were disappointed by the comments and stressed the need for members, particularly senior figures, to be mindful of their public utterances.

"We are very much disappointed in this particular commentary," Mr. Mohammed said. He added that party members should be guided by the broader interests of the NPP and be careful when discussing the party and its record in government.

According to him, public criticism that undermines the achievements of past NPP administrations could have implications for the party's efforts to regain political power.

Mr. Mohammed emphasised that the NPP's electoral success has historically been built on the achievements of former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

"We cannot win political power without standing on the strength of President Kufuor's performance and also on the strength of President Akufo-Addo's performance," he stated.

He argued that both administrations made significant contributions to Ghana's development and that those accomplishments should remain central to the party's message ahead of future elections.

Describing Mr. Agyapong's comments as regrettable, he noted that it was "very unfortunate" for a senior party member to make such statements publicly.

Due Process to Guide Any Action

Amid growing calls from some supporters for disciplinary action against the former lawmaker, the NPP leadership indicated that any concerns arising from the remarks would be handled through established party structures.

Mr. Mohammed pointed to the party's constitutional grievance procedures, noting that petitions regarding the comments may be submitted and considered through the appropriate channels.

"When you check the party's constitution, we have the grievances procedure," he said, adding that "due process must always be used in all instances."

The latest development highlights growing tensions within sections of the opposition party as it seeks to consolidate support and prepare for the 2028 general elections.

While party leaders continue to call for unity, the debate sparked by Kennedy Agyapong's remarks is expected to remain a key talking point among NPP members in the coming days.
