Mining and geological experts from across Africa and Europe are meeting in Pretoria for the PanAfGeo+ National AMREC/PARC–UNFC Workshop aimed at strengthening mineral resource governance and sustainable management across the continent.
The workshop is focused on improving collaboration on harmonised reporting standards, governance frameworks and implementation strategies aligned with the African Union’s Africa Mining Vision and Agenda 2063.
Participants drawn from government institutions, geological surveys, academia, industry and international organisations are exchanging technical expertise and practical experiences on how Africa can derive long-term value from its mineral resources.
Organisers say the engagement comes at a critical time as African countries seek to strengthen transparency, sustainability and accountability within the extractive sector.
“Africa’s mineral future depends not only on what we extract but also on how we classify, govern, and manage our resources sustainably,” organisers noted during the discussions.
Representing the African Minerals Development Centre, Officer-in-Charge Tunde Arisekola is contributing to discussions on implementation tools under the Africa Mining Vision, institutional collaboration and capacity building.
According to him, strengthening knowledge-sharing and practical implementation pathways remains essential to ensuring that Africa’s mineral wealth supports long-term economic transformation and benefits local populations.
The workshop is expected to deepen partnerships and promote coordinated approaches to mineral governance under the broader PanAfGeo+ programme.
