STC to Receive 140 New Buses as Government Expands Public Transport Fleet

Ghana’s public transportation sector is set for a major boost as the State Transport Company (STC) prepares to receive 140 new buses within the next two months under a government initiative aimed at improving mobility and easing transportation challenges across the country.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, as concerns continue to mount over inadequate transport services, overcrowding, and growing demand for intercity travel.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, June 8, the Minister outlined government plans to strengthen public transportation through significant investments in both the State Transport Company and Metro Mass Transit (MMT).

According to him, the move forms part of a broader strategy to increase the availability of high-capacity buses and improve connectivity between major towns and cities.

“We know the difficulties that we are experiencing with transportation, but we are very certain that the next 100 MMT buses will come in within the next two months and STC will also have 140 buses, and we will be able to have more high occupancy buses.” - Minister for Transport

Addressing Commuter Challenges

The planned fleet expansion comes at a time when many commuters and long-distance travellers have raised concerns about delays, limited seating capacity, and unreliable transport services.

Officials believe the arrival of the new buses will help reduce pressure on existing transport operators while providing safer and more efficient travel options for the public.

The announcement also seeks to reassure Ghanaians about the government’s commitment to modernising the transport sector following questions regarding the deployment of the 100 Metro Mass Transit buses commissioned earlier this year.

The Transport Ministry expects the additional buses to significantly enhance intercity transportation, improve passenger convenience, and support economic activities by facilitating easier movement of people across the country.

With the anticipated delivery of both the STC and MMT buses in the coming months, government hopes to strengthen Ghana’s public transport network and address longstanding challenges affecting commuters nationwide.
