Donald Trump is set to visit Beijing from May 13 to 15 for high-level discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, with trade relations, Iran and regional security expected to dominate the agenda.

The visit, confirmed by China’s foreign ministry, marks the first trip by a sitting US president to China since 2017 and comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions and ongoing economic disputes between the world’s two largest economies.

According to US officials, President Trump is expected to push for stronger cooperation on Iran, particularly as China remains one of the largest buyers of Iranian oil despite international pressure and sanctions.

The White House also hopes the meetings will help reduce trade tensions and reopen direct diplomatic engagement between Washington and Beijing after months of strained relations over tariffs, Taiwan and regional security concerns.

US officials said the administration is seeking what it described as “good deals” for the American people while maintaining strategic dialogue with one of America’s main global competitors.

The trip had initially been scheduled earlier this year but was postponed as the White House focused on the conflict involving Iran.

Beyond formal negotiations, the visit will also include symbolic diplomatic events such as a state banquet and a tour of Beijing’s historic Temple of Heaven.

Observers say the meetings could play an important role in shaping global trade, energy markets and broader international diplomacy in the months ahead.
