Ghana Demands Probe into Xenophobic Attacks on Citizens in South Africa

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has called for a full-scale investigation into reported xenophobic attacks targeting Ghanaians in South Africa, following the circulation of a disturbing viral video online.

The footage, which has sparked widespread concern, shows a South African woman confronting a Ghanaian resident and accusing him of overstaying, while urging foreigners to return to their home countries rather than seek opportunities abroad.

In response, Mr Ablakwa revealed that he has engaged his South African counterpart, Ronald Lamola, in a telephone conversation to address the issue.

“I called him on the trending videos about Ghanaians coming under extremely disturbing xenophobic attacks in South Africa,” the Minister stated in a Facebook post on April 22, 2026.

According to him, the South African government has acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and pledged swift action.

“The South African Foreign Minister has expressed his empathy with the victims and promised full-scale investigations into the depressing incidents.” - Minister for Foreign Affairs

Support for Affected Ghanaians

Mr Ablakwa further disclosed that Ghana’s diplomatic mission in South Africa, led by High Commissioner Benjamin Quarshie, is actively providing support to affected citizens.

“I am gladdened that so far, colleagues in our diplomatic mission have located the main victim in the viral video and are offering consular assistance. He is doing very well. No Ghanaian life has been lost.” - Minister for Foreign Affairs

Authorities in South Africa are also expected to brief African ambassadors as part of efforts to manage the situation and prevent further escalation.

The Foreign Affairs Minister urged calm among Ghanaians, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens both at home and abroad under President John Dramani Mahama.

“Let me assure compatriots that the Mahama Administration remains uncompromising about the welfare and safety of Ghanaians… we are determined to guarantee the protection of all citizens.” - Minister for Foreign Affairs

Call for African Unity

Despite the tensions, Mr Ablakwa emphasised the need to preserve continental unity and solidarity, warning against allowing isolated incidents to undermine broader Pan-African ideals.

“May these regrettable incidents never quench our Pan-African love and solidarity… we shall not be divided by the hatred of a few fringe elements.” - Minister for Foreign Affairs

The call for investigation and calm comes as authorities work to address the situation and reinforce diplomatic ties between Ghana and South Africa.
