The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources has ordered the revocation of key mining leases held by Adamus Resources Limited following confirmed breaches of Ghana’s mining laws.
The decision affects the Akango, Salman, and Nkroful concessions and is based on findings from the Minerals Commission, which uncovered widespread illegal activities on the company’s sites.
Officials said the move was taken “in the public interest,” citing serious violations of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703) and related regulations governing the sector.
Findings Reveal Multiple Violations
According to the investigation, Adamus Resources Limited engaged in unauthorized subcontracting of mining operations without obtaining the required ministerial approval. Authorities also found that mining activities were carried out without approved operating plans or permits from the Chief Inspector of Mines.
The report further highlighted the company’s failure to secure necessary clearances from regulatory bodies, including the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).
In addition, foreign nationals were reportedly involved in illegal mining operations on the concessions, in violation of provisions under the Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Act, 2019 (Act 995).
Investigators observed that mining activities were conducted outside designated areas and failed to meet acceptable operational standards. The report noted that these practices led to significant environmental damage, including destruction of ecosystems and risks to water bodies and nearby communities.
Authorities described the situation as a serious threat to public health and livelihoods, reinforcing the need for immediate regulatory action.
Government Signals Tough Stance on Galamsey
The Ministry emphasized that the revocation does not preclude further legal action against the company, its directors, or management. It added that measures would be introduced to protect workers affected by the decision.
In a statement, the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to tackling illegal mining, stating it will “continue to take decisive action against all forms of illegal mining.”
The move underscores the government’s broader strategy to strengthen enforcement and ensure responsible resource management in Ghana’s mining sector.
