More than 40,000 registered voters are heading to the polls in the Ayawaso East by-election today, Tuesday, March 3, 2026, to choose a new Member of Parliament following the death of the area’s legislator earlier this year.
The parliamentary by-election was necessitated by the passing of Mahama Naser Toure in January 2026, which left the seat vacant and triggered fresh polls in the constituency.
The contest has drawn significant attention, with the two major political parties fielding prominent candidates. The New Patriotic Party has nominated Baba Ali after its internal primaries, while the National Democratic Congress is presenting former High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal, as its candidate.
EC Assures Credible Process
The Electoral Commission of Ghana has assured residents that all logistical and security arrangements are in place to guarantee a smooth and transparent exercise.
Speaking in an interview, the Commission’s Director of Research, Fred Tetteh, emphasised the importance of maintaining the integrity of the process. He reminded voters that the parliamentary election follows the first-past-the-post system, meaning the candidate with the highest number of valid votes cast will be declared the winner.
“This by-election, which is a parliamentary type of election, is first-past-the-post. So, one vote can make a difference, so when it is proven that a fraudulent activity took place, then the commission will make a decision.” - Fred Tetteh, Commission’s Director of Research
The Commission also cautioned against unlawful practices, particularly vote-buying, warning that any confirmed cases of electoral malpractice would attract sanctions.
Security personnel have been deployed to polling stations across the constituency to maintain order and ensure a peaceful voting environment. Observers say voter turnout and adherence to electoral guidelines will be critical in determining the credibility of the outcome in this closely watched contest.
