Bank of Ghana, GoldBod Finalising New Financing Model for Gold Purchases

The GoldBod financing arrangement is nearing completion, with the Bank of Ghana and the Ghana Gold Board holding final discussions on a new funding model designed to sustain the country's domestic gold purchasing programme while easing pressure on the central bank's finances.

Governor Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama disclosed the development after the Monetary Policy Committee meeting, saying consultations are still underway and a formal announcement will be made once the process is complete.

"We are still in discussions with them. From where we are now, GoldBod has a number of choices. Either government takes up its funding entirely, or a resort to the markets to fund it.

"We are still discussing that context with the Gold Board, and I'm sure the market will be informed very soon." - Dr. Asiama

New Funding Options Under Consideration

The Governor indicated that several financing options remain on the table, including direct government funding or raising capital through the financial markets.

Whichever route is eventually chosen, he stressed that the Bank of Ghana will continue supporting the country's gold accumulation programme.

Responding to questions about whether the new arrangement would complement the central bank's existing gold purchase initiative, Dr. Asiama answered in the affirmative.

Protecting the Central Bank's Balance Sheet

According to the Governor, the proposed reforms are intended to preserve the gains from Ghana's gold purchasing strategy while limiting the financial strain on the Bank of Ghana.

"Remember last year, the impact on our financials was quite significant. Since then, a number of steps have been taken, and this change is actually part of the reforms so that we continue to benefit from the activities of GoldBod, but at the same time, we stem the impact on the central bank's balance sheet." - Dr. Asiama

The planned financing model signals a shift towards a more sustainable approach as Ghana expands its domestic gold purchasing programme.

The Bank of Ghana is expected to announce the final structure after consultations with GoldBod and other stakeholders are concluded.
