The death toll from the jihadist attack on Ghanaian tomato traders in Titao, northern Burkina Faso, has risen to eight after one more victim succumbed to injuries. The attack, which occurred on February 14, 2026, was carried out by JNIM militants targeting a convoy of Ghanaian traders transporting tomatoes through the volatile Sahel region. In response to the escalating security situation, the Ghanaian government has ordered an emergency evacuation of citizens from northern Burkina Faso and issued an urgent travel advisory warning against all non-essential travel to the area."The government is deeply concerned about the deteriorating security situation in the Sahel region," a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs read. "We urge all Ghanaians to heed this advisory and avoid travel to high-risk areas until further notice."The Ghana Embassy in Ouagadougou has confirmed that JNIM militants were behind the deadly assault, which has sent shockwaves through Ghana's trading community.Security analyst Adam Bonnah has called for heightened security alertness, warning that the threat extends beyond Burkina Faso's borders."This is not just a Burkina Faso problem," Bonnah said. "The instability in the Sahel poses a direct threat to Ghana's security and economic interests. We need a coordinated regional response."The Ministry of Trade is working with the tomato traders' association to explore alternative routes and local production options to reduce dependency on the Burkina Faso corridor. The bodies of the deceased are being repatriated to Ghana for burial, with DNA testing underway to confirm identities.
