The Electricity Company of Ghana is set to committing an estimated GH¢240 million to improve electricity reliability and system capacity, in transformer upgrade exercise across parts of Accra.
According to ECG, the intervention will involve planned power outages in selected communities, including parts of East Legon Hills, Nanakrom, Borteyman, Lakeside, Katamanso, Teshie, Nungua, Lashibi, Baatsonaa and surrounding areas.
The utility provider said the project has been approved by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, as part of broader efforts to strengthen electricity delivery in fast-growing urban communities.
Twelve transformers to be replaced and upgraded
In a press release, ECG disclosed that the exercise will cover the replacement and upgrading of 12 transformers across six major primary substations at Adenta, La, Teshie-Nungua, Nmai-Dzor, Baatsonaa and Lashibi.
The company said the transformers will be upgraded from 20/26 MVA to 30/39 MVA, a move expected to significantly improve load-handling capacity and reduce recurring system overloads.
The project is also expected to boost operational resilience in areas that have experienced growing pressure on the power distribution network due to rapid residential and commercial expansion.
Customers to experience phased outages
Speaking during a press engagement, Acting Director of Communications at ECG, Dr Charles Nii Ayiku, said the temporary outages would be carried out in phases over a three-day period.
“Where we have existing substations, where we have only one transformer, we are going to add up to make it two,” he explained.
He added that each customer would experience about six hours of outage during the exercise and assured residents that the inconvenience would be short-lived.
“We want to entreat the customers around this enclave that it’s going to have some impact of load management, but we are very confident that within these two days we’ll be able to complete this work and all of them will enjoy the reliable supply.” - Dr Charles Nii Ayiku
ECG said the first phase of the upgrade will begin on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, and continue until Friday, April 10, 2026.
The company says the investment is part of a long-term plan to improve power stability and meet rising electricity demand in Accra’s expanding suburbs.
