The Ghana Football Association has officially ended the tenure of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, with the decision taking effect immediately after a disappointing run of results for the senior national team.
In a brief statement issued by GFA Communications, the Association confirmed the separation and expressed appreciation for Addo’s service to the team.
“The Association wishes to thank Otto Addo sincerely for his contribution to the team and wishes him the best of luck in his future endeavours.” - GFA Communications
The FA added that it would soon unveil the next technical direction for the Black Stars, signaling the beginning of another transition period for Ghana’s senior national side.
Defeats deepen pressure on Black Stars bench
Addo’s departure follows Ghana’s back-to-back defeats to Austria and Germany, results that stretched his losing streak to four consecutive matches and heightened pressure on the coaching bench.
The decision comes at a sensitive moment for the national team, which is preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be staged in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Ghana has been drawn into a challenging group featuring Panama, England and Croatia, increasing the urgency for a quick reset.
With expectations rising ahead of the tournament, the FA appears to have acted in a bid to restore confidence and improve the team’s competitive edge before the next phase of preparations.
Meanwhile, Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Iddie Adams has admitted that Ghana is still not fully ready for the tournament, but said steps are being taken to strengthen preparations on and off the pitch.
The minister explained that readiness for the World Cup extends beyond football performance alone and includes the country’s global image and representation.
He disclosed that government has set aside about $30 million for Ghana’s World Cup campaign. The budget is expected to cover team logistics, including accommodation, training, feeding and player bonuses, as well as promotional activities intended to project Ghana internationally.
New technical direction expected soon
The Ghana Football Association is now expected to move quickly to name either an interim technical team or a substantive replacement as preparations intensify.
With the World Cup countdown underway, the next appointment could prove decisive in shaping Ghana’s hopes of making a strong impression on football’s biggest stage.
