Ghana’s 5G deployment is expected to begin by December 2026, following the completion of spectrum assignment, Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations Minister Samuel Nartey George has announced.
The timeline forms part of the government’s plans to improve telecommunications quality and reliability while expanding access to faster mobile connectivity across the country.
Mr George made the announcement on Monday, September 7, 2026, at the Government Accountability Series at Jubilee House in Accra.
The Minister said the government expected to complete the assignment of spectrum for 5G services and move into deployment before the end of the year.
The development is expected to support faster mobile connections and improve the capacity of telecommunications networks as demand for digital services continues to grow.
Mr George did not provide further details on the spectrum assignment process or the operators expected to begin deployment.
New measures for network quality
The Ministry will also introduce a road excavation coordination framework and an Emergency Telecommunications Framework as part of efforts to improve network performance.
The arrangements will require operators to meet upgraded network quality standards.
The road excavation framework is intended to improve coordination around works that can affect telecommunications infrastructure, while the emergency framework is expected to strengthen the sector’s response to disruptions.
Mr George said poor network quality would no longer be treated as an issue that could be overlooked.
“The work is far from finished, and I will not pretend otherwise. But the direction is unmistakable, the results are measurable, and the resolve of this Ministry is unshaken,” he said.
The announcement places network reliability alongside 5G deployment as a key part of the government’s telecommunications agenda.
For consumers, the immediate expectation is that faster connectivity will be matched by more dependable service.
