Ghana's mobile money transactions reached GH¢518.8 billion in August 2026, representing a 46.5% increase over the GH¢354.1 billion recorded during the same month last year.
The Bank of Ghana’s September 2026 Summary of Economic and Financial Data shows that the value of transactions also rose from GH¢509.4 billion in July, extending the growth in payments and transfers processed through mobile money platforms.
The figures highlight the increasing scale of digital financial activity among individuals and businesses.
Transaction Volume Crosses One Billion
Mobile money platforms processed 1.046 billion transactions in August, compared with 969 million in July.
The increase indicates that growth was not limited to the value of money moving through the platforms. Customers also carried out more transactions during the month.
Registered mobile money accounts reached 85.8 million by August, while active accounts stood at 26.4 million.
The registered account figure should not be interpreted as the number of individual users, since one person may hold multiple accounts.
Active Agents Rise to 594,000
The network of active mobile money agents expanded from 550,000 in July to 594,000 in August.
That represents an additional 44,000 active agents in one month, improving the reach of services used for cash deposits, withdrawals and transfers.
The Bank of Ghana defines active agents as those who transacted at least once in the 30 days before reporting. Active accounts are those that “transacted at least once in the 90 days before reporting.”
Meanwhile, the balance on mobile money float increased from GH¢39 billion in July to GH¢39.8 billion in August.
Unlike the GH¢518.8 billion transaction value, which measures activity over the month, the float figure represents the balance held within the mobile money system at the reporting date.
