The Ministry of Health Ghana has intensified efforts to build a resilient, research-driven healthcare system, leveraging the Annual Conference on Pharmacoepidemiology in Africa to advance reforms and partnerships.

The event, organised by the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology, is bringing together global experts, policymakers, and researchers from April 20 to 22, 2026, to address Africa’s shifting health landscape.

Delivering the keynote address, Deputy Minister for Health Grace Ayensu-Danquah highlighted the continent’s transition from infectious diseases to a growing burden of non-communicable diseases.

She stressed the need for evidence-based interventions aligned with frameworks by the World Health Organization, including SDG Target 3.4 and the WHO PEN-Plus strategy. According to her, effective responses must be grounded in data, research, and strong policy coordination.

Reforms to Strengthen Healthcare Access

The government outlined key reforms aimed at improving healthcare delivery. These include a 66 per cent increase in National Health Insurance Scheme funding to GH¢9.8 billion in 2025, alongside the introduction of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as MahamaCares, to support treatment for chronic conditions.

The interventions are designed to expand access, reduce out-of-pocket expenses, and strengthen long-term care systems.

Prof. Ayensu-Danquah emphasised the role of pharmacovigilance, health data systems, and research in shaping effective healthcare policies. She also highlighted the importance of public–private partnerships in driving innovation and ensuring equitable access.

ISPE President Ursula Kirchmayer described the conference as a critical platform for scientific collaboration, stressing the need to invest in young researchers to sustain progress.

The conference is expected to deepen collaboration across Africa, strengthening research capacity and supporting policy development aimed at addressing the continent’s evolving health challenges.
