President John Dramani Mahama has announced that 300,000 Ghanaians will be trained this year under the government’s One Million Coders Programme, as part of efforts to strengthen digital and artificial intelligence skills nationwide.

The announcement was made on Friday, April 24, during the launch of Ghana’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy in Accra, where the initiative was highlighted as a cornerstone of the country’s future workforce development.

"These are more than numbers, they represent opportunities, employability and national preparedness.” - President John Dramani Mahama

According to President Mahama, a pilot phase conducted in 2025 enabled the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation to assess readiness for full implementation.

“The pilot phase… enabled the ministry to assess readiness for nationwide rollout.

"The portal is now open, and more than 100,000 applications have already been processed.” - President John Dramani Mahama

Participants can enrol in over 15 courses spanning 10 disciplines, with learning centres established within local communities to improve access.

Building Skills for the AI Economy

The President emphasised that human capital development is central to Ghana’s AI strategy, stressing the need to equip citizens with both practical and advanced technological skills.

“Youthful potential must be matched by structured opportunity,” he said, adding that the programme will enable Ghanaians to not only use AI tools but also “build, govern, improve and apply them to solve our national problems.”

President Mahama noted that the initiative is designed to create a strong national talent pipeline while promoting innovation and entrepreneurship.

He added that the One Million Coders Programme will play a critical role in positioning Ghana competitively within the global digital economy, ensuring that the country fully benefits from emerging technological advancements.
