Trading on the Ghana Stock Exchange opened the week on a much quieter note, with Ghana Stock Exchange turnover tumbling by more than 83 percent as investor activity narrowed sharply around a handful of stocks led by Kasapreko PLC.
The Exchange's Official List for Trading Session 7256 showed that investors traded 859,644 shares worth GH¢2.61 million on Monday, July 20, a steep decline from the previous session when 2.78 million shares valued at GH¢15.57 million changed hands.
The figures point to a market that has eased back after a burst of high value activity recorded late last week.
Ordinary shares continued to dominate the market, accounting for GH¢2.59 million of total turnover, while activity on the Ghana Alternative Market remained relatively modest.
Kasapreko Extends Its Grip on Market Activity
If there was one stock that stood apart from the rest, it was Kasapreko.
The beverage manufacturer once again emerged as the busiest counter on the Exchange, with 435,857 shares traded at a value of GH¢871,714. The stock finished unchanged at GH¢2.00 but still accounted for more than half of all shares traded during the session and roughly a third of the market's total value.
The trading report noted that "Kasapreko led the market with 435,857 shares traded, valued at GH¢871,714.00," underscoring the company's continued role as the market's most liquid counter since its listing.
CalBank also delivered strong volume, recording 259,556 shares worth GH¢207,644.80, while MTN Ghana traded 46,258 shares valued at GH¢303,919.35.
GCB Bank Drives Value Despite Slight Dip
Although trading volume remained relatively modest, GCB Bank ranked second by value after recording GH¢631,168.20 from just 14,757 shares.
The banking stock slipped marginally to GH¢42.77 from GH¢42.78, representing one of the few price declines recorded during the day. Enterprise Group, Ecobank Transnational Incorporated and Ghana Oil Company also shed one pesewa each, reflecting an otherwise subdued session with limited price movement.
Together, Kasapreko, GCB Bank, MTN Ghana, Ecobank Ghana and CalBank generated GH¢2.26 million in trades, representing almost 87 percent of the day's market turnover. The concentration highlighted how much trading depended on a small number of actively traded equities.
While the main market lacked momentum, the Ghana Alternative Market delivered a rare burst of optimism.
Intravenous Infusions PLC posted the strongest gain of the day after climbing 9.52 percent to close at GH¢0.46. Hords PLC also advanced by 5.56 percent to GH¢0.19.
The two companies accounted for all activity on the alternative market, with Intravenous Infusions trading 29,500 shares and Hords recording 20,000 shares.
Market Breadth Remains Weak
The quiet mood extended across much of the Exchange. Several listed companies, including Agricultural Development Bank, AngloGold Ashanti PLC, Standard Chartered Bank Ghana, TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana, Unilever Ghana and Tullow Oil, recorded no trades during the session. NewGold ETF was also unchanged after attracting no transactions.
The latest figures suggest liquidity remains available but highly selective. Investors continue to favour a small group of familiar counters while much of the broader market remains inactive.
Monday's trading also indicates that the previous session's exceptionally strong turnover may have been driven largely by sizeable block trades rather than broad market participation. Without those transactions, activity returned to more measured levels.
For investors, the session offered a familiar message. Prices held largely steady, yet participation thinned noticeably. Until trading spreads across a wider range of stocks, market turnover is likely to remain heavily dependent on a handful of liquid counters, with Kasapreko continuing to set the pace.
