Trading on the Ghana Stock Exchange opened September with a major jump in activity, as investors traded 4.49 million shares valued at GH¢25.86 million on September 1, 2026, with MTN Ghana accounting for the overwhelming share of the turnover.
The figure marks a sharp acceleration from August 31, when 1.85 million shares worth GH¢5.14 million were traded. Market value therefore increased more than fivefold in one session, while trading volume more than doubled.
Yet the surge was hardly broad based.
MTN Ghana dominates trading
MTN Ghana accounted for 3.14 million shares worth GH¢21.75 million, representing about 84.09% of total market value traded.
The heavy activity did not translate into a price gain. The telecommunications company fell from GH¢6.97 to GH¢6.92, a decline of 0.72%.
The concentration is striking. Without MTN Ghana, total market turnover would have been roughly GH¢4.12 million, underscoring how dependent the day’s liquidity was on a single large counter.
Kasapreko PLC followed with GH¢1.17 million in value from 613,131 shares. Its price dropped 2.06% to GH¢1.90.
Enterprise Group also recorded significant activity, with 132,146 shares valued at GH¢866,010.32 changing hands. The stock declined 2.83% to GH¢6.53.
Ecobank Ghana and GCB Bank remained unchanged at GH¢39.02 and GH¢39.55 respectively, while GOIL also held at GH¢7.45.
Mixed price movements
The financial sector delivered a mixed performance. CAL Bank recovered, gaining 4.29% to GH¢0.73 on 188,069 shares.
Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, however, declined 3.76% to GH¢1.79. Standard Chartered Bank Ghana and First Atlantic Bank ended unchanged.
TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana recorded the steepest decline on the main market, falling 8.92% to GH¢37.80, although only 2,377 shares were traded.
Dannex Ayrton Starwin also dropped sharply, losing 9.89% to GH¢1.64.
On the Ghana Alternative Market, Digicut Production & Advertising gained 7.14% to GH¢0.30, while Intravenous Infusions and Hords both declined.
Strong turnover, but concentrated market
The September 1 session presents a curious picture for the GSE. Liquidity surged, but most of it came from MTN Ghana.
That means the GH¢25.86 million turnover should not yet be read as evidence of a broad revival in market participation. Several actively traded stocks actually closed lower, including MTN Ghana, Kasapreko, Enterprise Group and Ecobank Transnational Incorporated.
The pattern points more to active repositioning and possible portfolio rebalancing than a market wide buying spree.
For the exchange, the larger issue remains depth. A single company generating more than 84% of daily trading value highlights MTN Ghana’s importance to the market, but also the limited liquidity available across many other listed counters.
The next few sessions will show whether the September opening was the start of sustained momentum or simply another MTN driven spike in activity.
