GRIDCo, ECG Shut Down Mallam and Achimota Substations After Flooding Disrupts Power Infrastructure

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have temporarily shut down power supply from the Mallam and Achimota primary substations following severe flooding caused by heavy rains in parts of the Greater Accra Region.

In a joint statement issued on Monday, June 29, the two power utilities said the precautionary measure was necessary to protect critical electricity infrastructure, operational personnel and the public from potential electrical hazards.

According to the statement, floodwaters inundated key installations at several substations, creating significant safety risks that made it impossible to continue operations.

“The precautionary shutdown became necessary because the flooding has affected critical power infrastructure at a number of substations, posing significant risks to both electrical equipment and operational personnel,” GRIDCo and ECG stated.

Utilities Monitor Situation

The two institutions said they are continuously assessing the impact of the flooding on the transmission and distribution network while closely monitoring weather conditions.

They cautioned that additional power supply interruptions could occur if flooding threatens other electricity infrastructure.

“As the heavy rains and flooding persist, the public is advised that power supply may be interrupted as a safety measure to protect lives, property and critical electricity infrastructure whenever safety risks are identified,” the statement said.

GRIDCo and ECG stressed that electricity would only be restored when conditions become safe for both workers and equipment.

Public Urged to Report Electrical Hazards

The utilities appealed to residents to remain vigilant and immediately report any electricity-related dangers, including fallen utility poles, exposed or damaged power lines and flooded electrical installations, to the nearest ECG office or through the company's customer service channels.

They noted that timely reporting would support rapid emergency response efforts and help prevent accidents during the ongoing adverse weather conditions.

GRIDCo and ECG apologised to customers affected by the outage and thanked the public for their patience and cooperation.

The companies assured residents that every effort would be made to restore electricity supply as quickly as possible once floodwaters recede and engineers confirm that the affected facilities are safe to resume operations.
