The Institute of Economic Affairs has launched its Nuclear Energy Programme in Ghana to strengthen policy dialogue, research, and advocacy around the country’s nuclear power ambitions.

The initiative, unveiled at a high-level roundtable in Accra, forms part of the Institute’s Nuclear Energy Centre of Excellence and is expected to serve as a platform for stakeholder engagement on Ghana’s long-term energy strategy.

The event, held under the theme “Powering Ghana’s Industrial Future: The Role of Nuclear Energy in Energy Security and Sustainable Development,” brought together policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders to explore nuclear energy's role in national development.

Stakeholders assess progress and challenges.

Chaired by Prof. David Okoh Kpegloh, the roundtable featured key institutions including the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission and the Nuclear Power Institute.

During the session, Dr Archibold Buah-Kwofie of the Nuclear Power Institute delivered a detailed presentation on Ghana’s nuclear power programme, outlining milestones achieved, ongoing challenges, and the steps required to sustain progress.

Participants received an update on preparations for the country’s first nuclear power plant and the strategic actions needed in the coming years.

Discussions at the forum emphasised the importance of nuclear energy in strengthening Ghana’s energy security and supporting industrialisation.

Participants noted that nuclear power could play a vital role in providing a stable, long-term electricity supply to drive economic growth and sustainable development.

The roundtable also highlighted the need for continued collaboration among institutions such as the Nuclear Regulatory Authority and the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission to ensure compliance with international standards.

Platform for research and public engagement

The Institute said the programme will act as a neutral platform for engagement among policymakers, technical experts, academia, and the general public.

According to the statement, the initiative is aimed at “promoting policy dialogue, research, and advocacy to support Ghana’s successful development of nuclear power.”

It added that the programme will help strengthen public understanding of nuclear energy while addressing policy, technical, and governance issues.

The Institute reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ghana’s efforts to integrate nuclear energy into its future energy mix, describing the programme as a critical step toward ensuring long-term energy security and sustainable economic growth.
