President Mahama Signals Possible Cabinet Reshuffle

President John Dramani Mahama has signalled a possible cabinet reshuffle as the government moves to evaluate the performance of ministers and chief executives of state institutions, with the outcome expected to influence future appointments and administrative restructuring.

The indication was contained in a statement issued by the Presidency on Monday, June 8, outlining plans for a comprehensive assessment of government appointees as part of efforts to strengthen accountability and improve service delivery.

According to the statement signed by Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, the forthcoming review will serve as a key tool for determining whether ministers and heads of state institutions remain in their current positions or face reassignment.

“The findings of this review shall constitute a key basis for decisions relating to retention in office, reassignment of responsibilities, and any future Cabinet or executive restructuring,” the statement noted.

The announcement has heightened expectations of possible changes within government as the administration seeks to align performance with its broader policy and development objectives.

Presidency Raises Concerns Over Private Awards

The Presidency also expressed concern over the growing trend of public officials accepting awards from private organisations that claim to recognise outstanding performance in public service.

According to the statement, some of these award schemes lack transparent evaluation methods and verifiable criteria, creating the risk of misleading public perceptions about government performance.

“The increasing trend of Ministers of State, Chief Executive Officers of State Institutions, and other public officials participating in and accepting awards from various private organisations has the potential to undermine the integrity of public service,” the Presidency cautioned.

Officials were further warned that participation in such events could expose government institutions to unnecessary criticism and reputational risks.

Focus on Results and Accountability

President Mahama has therefore directed all ministers, chief executives, and political appointees to refrain from accepting, endorsing, sponsoring, or participating in private award schemes unless they receive express approval from the Office of the President.

The Presidency stressed that public service performance should be measured through tangible outcomes, prudent management of resources, effective implementation of policies, and improvements in service delivery rather than external recognition.

Government officials have consequently been urged to concentrate on fulfilling their mandates and delivering meaningful results for citizens.

The statement reaffirmed that the Mahama administration remains focused on implementing its development agenda and meeting commitments made to the Ghanaian people.

With the planned performance assessment expected in the coming months, attention is now turning to whether the review will result in significant changes within Cabinet and state institutions as government seeks to strengthen efficiency, accountability, and performance across the public sector.
