Mahama Calls Emergency Cabinet Meeting over Rising Fuel Prices

President John Dramani Mahama has called an emergency cabinet meeting to consider urgent measures aimed at cushioning consumers from the latest surge in fuel prices in Ghana, as tensions in the Middle East continue to unsettle global oil markets.

Speaking on the second day of the Kwahu Business Forum, the President said the government is preparing targeted interventions to reduce the pressure on households and businesses affected by rising petroleum costs.

“I have called for this emergency cabinet meeting to decide on specific measures we can take to cushion petroleum prices while we hope the conflict comes to an end.

“There are adjustments we can make, particularly in the margins, to help maintain relatively stable prices as we pray for the war to cease.” - President John Dramani Mahama

Focus on petroleum price build-up

President Mahama said cabinet will review the components that make up local fuel pricing and assess which areas can be adjusted to provide relief without destabilising the broader economy.

He assured Ghanaians that while the external shock is serious, the country remains resilient. “I can confidently tell you that the economy will not collapse because of the war in Iran,” he emphasised.

His remarks come at a time of heightened public concern over transport costs, inflation and the broader cost of living, all of which are closely tied to movements in pump prices.

Pump prices rise sharply

Fuel prices in Ghana rose significantly from April 1, 2026, following new pricing guidance from the National Petroleum Authority.

Petrol increased by about 15 percent to GH¢13.30 per litre, while diesel jumped roughly 19 percent to GH¢17.10 per litre for the April 1–15 pricing window.

The President also praised transport unions for delaying any increase in lorry fares despite the fuel hike, describing their restraint as a critical step in helping to contain the immediate impact on commuters and the wider economy.

The outcome of the cabinet meeting is expected to shape the government’s next response to the fuel price shock.
