President John Dramani Mahama has announced a 48 Engineer Regiment national honour after the military unit completed the clearing of the Accra to Kumasi Expressway route one week ahead of schedule.
The regiment cleared 175.6 kilometres in 19 weeks, beating the 20-week deadline set for the exercise.
President Mahama announced the award on Monday, September 14, when the Ghana Armed Forces formally handed the cleared right of way to the government for the next stage of the expressway project.
“In 20 weeks, I’m pleased to announce to the whole country Ghana that our armed forces have accomplished this mission,” he said. “One week ahead of schedule, they did it in 19 weeks.”
Honour planned for Ghana at 70
The President said the regiment would receive the Companion of the Order of the Volta during the next national honours ceremony, expected to coincide with Ghana’s 70th Independence anniversary in 2027.
“I have given instructions that at the next national honours, which we shall do to mark the 70th anniversary of independence of the Republic of Ghana, the engineers regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces shall receive an Order of the Companion of the Volta.” - President Mahama
Route runs from Ablekuma to Sewua
The cleared section stretches from Ablekuma in the Greater Accra Region to Sewua in the Ashanti Region. Soldiers worked through forests and crossed rivers and streams to open the corridor.
“As they say in military jargon, mission accomplished,” President Mahama said.
The full Accra to Kumasi Expressway will cover 198.7 kilometres and provide a six-lane connection between Ghana’s two largest cities.
The clearing operation formed part of the project’s preparatory work, with construction expected to follow the handover.
