President John Dramani Mahama has said Lincoln University continues to command deep respect in Ghana despite the institution’s decision to withdraw an honorary doctorate that was due to be conferred on him.
The university recently cancelled plans for the award just days before the scheduled ceremony after concerns reportedly emerged within sections of its community over Mahama’s perceived position on LGBTQ issues.
Speaking during an engagement with the Ghanaian community in Philadelphia on Thursday, March 26, 2026, Mahama chose a conciliatory tone, focusing instead on the institution’s enduring historical importance to Ghana.
Historic Ties to Ghana Highlighted
Mahama said Lincoln University occupies a unique place in Ghana’s national story because of its association with Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah.
“Whatever disagreements have arisen, for me, Lincoln University holds a special place in my heart.
“It is where our first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was nurtured intellectually and shaped in his Pan-Africanist struggle.” - President John Dramani Mahama
He described the university as “hallowed ground for Ghanaians,” underscoring its symbolic significance in the country’s political and intellectual history.
Relationship Will Endure
The President also made it clear that the controversy surrounding the honorary degree would not alter Ghana’s broader regard for the institution.
“We cannot separate Lincoln University from the story of Ghana, and we will continue to hold the institution in the highest esteem.” - President John Dramani Mahama
His remarks appeared aimed at preserving the long-standing bond between Ghana and the university, even as the withdrawal of the award has sparked public discussion both at home and abroad.
For many Ghanaians, Lincoln University’s connection to Nkrumah continues to make it an important site of Pan-African memory, regardless of the current disagreement.
